Brexit Negotiations: Round 7 Concludes in Brussels

Negotiations Between UK and EU Continue

Outcome of the Seventh Round

The seventh round of Brexit negotiations between the United Kingdom and the European Union concluded in Brussels on 9 February 2018. This round marked the first phase of negotiations since the UK triggered Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty in March 2017. The primary focus of this round was to address the crucial issues of citizens' rights, the financial settlement, and the Irish border question.

The negotiations were led by David Davis, the UK's Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, and Michel Barnier, the EU's Chief Negotiator. Both sides expressed a commitment to finding common ground and progressing the negotiations in a constructive manner.

However, significant differences remain between the two parties on several key issues. The UK continues to insist on a comprehensive free trade agreement with the EU, while the EU has stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of the single market. The financial settlement remains a contentious issue, with the UK offering a payment of £39 billion to the EU, while the EU estimates the bill to be in the region of £60 billion.

Despite these challenges, both sides agreed to continue negotiations and to meet again in Brussels in March 2018. It is hoped that the next round of talks will produce more concrete progress and help to pave the way for a smooth and orderly withdrawal of the UK from the European Union.
