The previous turf field had come under scrutiny after several players suffered injuries on it during games. In Week 2 of the 2022 season, multiple 49ers players were injured while playing the Jets on the field, and similar incidents occurred later in the year. The new turf surface is designed to reduce the number of injuries that occur on the field. It is believed to be an improved synthetic turf over the previous one. The installation of the new turf field is expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2023 season.
